About the Client

Calpine Corporation is the largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources in the United States. A Fortune 500 company headquartered in Houston, Texas, Calpine operates in competitive power markets across the country and is owned by an affiliate of Energy Capital Partners alongside a consortium of institutional investors.

Operating at that scale means complex, interconnected application environments – where visibility, data flow, and infrastructure reliability are not just technical concerns, but business-critical requirements.

The Challenge

Calpine needed a modern cloud architecture that could unify their existing application landscape – improving connectivity across systems, centralizing data visibility, and optimizing business processes end-to-end. The core ask was integration: breaking down silos between cloud-based applications and creating a foundation where information flows freely and reliably.

Key objectives defined at the outset:

  • Assess the existing application ecosystem and identify the optimal path to cloud adoption using DevOps best practices
  • Design and deploy an Azure cloud architecture that ensures availability, performance, scalability, and security across production systems
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines to accelerate and standardize application development and delivery
  • Automate configuration management to eliminate the manual overhead of ongoing infrastructure support
  • Embed security at every stage of both cloud and on-premise platform delivery

Our Approach

HANS IT began with a thorough discovery of Calpine’s existing application landscape – mapping processes, dependencies, and gaps before a single line of infrastructure was written. From that foundation, a detailed cloud implementation roadmap was drafted in close collaboration with Calpine’s business and technical teams.

Cloud Architecture Assessment & Roadmap

A comprehensive study of Calpine’s existing applications was conducted to identify DevOps best practices applicable to their environment. The output was a detailed, phased cloud implementation roadmap – built around a thorough understanding of Calpine’s operational needs, not a generic blueprint.

Azure Cloud Deployment & Automation

An Azure-based cloud environment was designed, deployed, and automated to deliver enterprise-grade availability, performance, scalability, and security across all production systems. Infrastructure-as-code principles were applied throughout, ensuring every environment is reproducible, auditable, and consistent.

CI/CD Pipeline Implementation

Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery pipelines were implemented to streamline application development and deployment cycles – reducing release friction, cutting manual errors, and giving Calpine’s teams the ability to ship faster with greater confidence.

Configuration Management Automation

Manual configuration management was replaced with automated processes, eliminating a significant source of ongoing operational overhead. This freed engineering resources from reactive maintenance work and reduced the risk of configuration drift across environments.

Security at Every Layer

Security was not treated as an afterthought or a final checkpoint. It was embedded into every stage of development and delivery – covering both cloud and on-premise platform solutions – ensuring that production systems meet the rigorous compliance and resilience standards expected of a Fortune 500 energy operator.

Results & Outcomes

Unified Cloud Architecture
Azure deployment connected previously siloed applications, giving Calpine a single, integrated environment with improved data visibility across business processes.
Automated Infrastructure at Scale
Configuration management automation eliminated manual overhead and reduced the risk of environment inconsistency across Calpine’s large-scale production systems.
Faster, Reliable Delivery Cycles
CI/CD pipeline implementation accelerated application delivery and reduced deployment risk – enabling Calpine’s teams to move with speed and confidence.
